What is a farm asset register?

Short answer: A farm asset register is a list of the physical things your farm depends on: wells, pumps, fences, gates, buildings, roads, culverts, machinery and tools. For each one it records what it is, where it is, what service it supports, and what condition it is in. It is the foundation of every other asset management decision. You cannot manage what you have not written down.

Keep it small enough to keep up

The most common failure is building a register so detailed it is never updated. Start with the assets that support your most important services. Add the rest later, or never.

What it unlocks

Once you have a register, you can rate criticality, find single points of failure, plan maintenance, prove a loss to an insurer, and hand the farm to someone else with confidence.
